Tetbury cyclists!
I was excited to explore the newly launched Welsh Newspapers online. Submitting my usual search term of 'Tetbury' I came across this little gem which fitted nicely with my last blog on a cyclist.
'The little old-world town of Tetbury witnesses a scene on Monday evening last that would have caused our grandmothers' hair to stand on end. Quite a large number of the governesses and pupils of the Girls' Collegiate School met in front of the house with their bicycles, under the leadership of Miss Eleanor Jennings, one of the principals, and, after being photographed in a group, proceeded to ride in single file down the Long street, making quite a pretty picture. Most of the eighteen taking part in the procession have learnt the art of cycling during the last six months.'
[Evening Express 2 July 1896 p.2]
Now, wouldn't it be wonderful if this said photograph, probably taken by one of the town's photographers - either Persis Lamb and/or her father, or James Clark, was lurking in someones personal collection. Do you have a copy, or recall seeing one? If so, get in touch, it would be a good one for the archives.
